Low Profile LED Tape Illuminates Modern Upscale NYC Italian Restaurant

Founded in 2001, Il Gattopardo recently relocated to The Rockefeller Townhouses, originally built in 1897 by architect Henry Hardenbergh (famous for Dakota Building and Plaza Hotel) , on “Millionaire’s Row” in the heart of Midtown Manhattan. The modernized interior design was adapted to the existing conditions of the historic architecture while maintaining a unified upscale design for this dining establishment.

Designed to translate a vision of comfort, modernity and simplicity, the understated elegance of the main dining room featured a series of sleek ceiling coffers incorporating an extruded aluminum "knife edge" perimeter detail giving the pop-ups a clean appearance as if they disappear into the ceiling. Low profile LED illumination is the room's main light source as the owners wanted patrons to look their best. Indirect light from the coffers achieves this goal and provides a soft shadow-free glow on the patrons' faces, supplemented with movement by candlelight.

Anita Jorgensen Lighting Design selected energy efficient InvisiLED® LED tape luminaires for their diminutive profile to be concealed in the small spaces designated for coves, within coffers and behind mirrors enhancing the architecture with multiple layers of light.

The glowing coffers are achieved with InvisiLED® tucked behind the long canted mirror running the length of the room. Independently dimmable, continuous InvisiLED® runs the length of the mirror concealed at the top and bottom highlighting the grooved poplar walls. Above the mirror, cove mounted tape uplights the ceiling.

Il Gattopardo serves authentic Southern Italian cuisine adapted for the contemporary palate of its loyal upscale New Yorker clientele, keeping the tradition of Italian culture and hospitality, vibrant and passionate.
